Electric Heel Records
Coupling the words fantastic and funk, Ana Popovic has created her own portmanteau, “Fantastafunk,” as she announces, “Members of my “Fantastafunk” big band on both sides of the ocean were featured on the record.”
Let’s give them a shout out: Popovic on vocals and guitar, acoustic and slide guitar, Buthel on bass and background vocals, Michela Papadia and Jeremy Thomas on keys, Chris Coleman and Donnel Spencer on drums, Claudio Giovagnoli and Evan Knight on sax, Davide Ghidoni and Jordan Carr on trumpet, Brett Lamel on trombone, Karl Vanderbosche and Frank Moca on percussion and five other background singers.
With 12 prior CDs and three DVDs to her credit as well as ten national/international nominations for various blues and jazz awards, she is well overdue to take an award home. Her title cut sets an up tempo beat that utilizes Popovic’s vocals echoed with her background singers as the full spectrum of her Fantastafunk band punctuates in and out of the phrases. As you listen, you’ll feel like joining in Popovic’s invitation to “dance to the rhythm.”
Cleverly covering Paul Simon’s “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” 50 years after its initial release, she weaves her signature voice in and out between her clean guitar lines as her band adds layer after layer of sound to make this an outstanding track on Dance To The Rhythm.
“Soul’ution” is a captivating tune that is Santana-esque in style with Popovic’s clean soaring guitar and hypnotic and alluring percussion enhancement throughout. Her guitar playing and tone are masterful as well as precise. “Sisters And Brothers” exhibits her exacting and stylish slide guitar technique and contains the hopeful words, “Living in the moment, we can wash the tears away, away. Let’s love each other through the pain. Sisters and brothers, there’s no shame.”
The CD cover is both intriguing and sensual as it pictures Popovic holding her guitar emblazoned with “Ana Popovic” in cursive pearl on the fret board with the strap over her right shoulder ala T-Bone Walker, fingerless black gloved hands, and an eye-catching vivid red leather outfit above her black fishnet stockings and leather boots. Her facial features above her black leather choker collar exude the confidence of knowing that her looks both equal and complement her musical skills.
Popovic co-wrote seven of the tunes with two by J. Sabin and one by Paul Simon. Each one appears to be crafted with talent, intensity, and deliberate listenability. Please seek out your own CD copy and enjoy it to the fullest.
