From just a look at Billy Price’s mature and well-worn face, you would not be blamed for thinking “The East Coast King of Blue-Eyed Soul” has done it all. Hardly.
Price, featuring The Billy Price Band, has put together a sparkling new recording entitled Random Madness. It was recorded in October of 2025 in Price’s hometown of Pittsburgh. Random Magic (11-tracks over 48-minutes) just kills from beginning to end. Price is more recognized as a soul singer than a blues artist, but can play with the latter’s sometimes humorous and brilliant intensity. The band is truly marvelous throughout.
Along with peripatetic drummer, producer, and multi-Grammy winning Tony Braunagel (who produced and played drums on several tracks) along with engineers Jimmy Hoyson and Brian Ammon, Price and his dazzling band have introduced a recording that you’ll want at hand for multiple listens. Sergio Rios did a terrific job in mixing all the tracks as the sound on all the cuts is complete and perfect. The horn section and arrangements couldn’t be better. This Northern New Jersey-raised artist, now living in Philly states, “This album is the most personal of my career.”
As for this most satisfying recording, Price and his band’s musical director, keyboardist Jim Britton, have fashioned an LP they can surely be proud of. The horn arrangements and playing are glorious. Price’s sincere and spot-on vocals lead the proceedings toward what surely is the most successful and heartfelt album of his long tenure as a singer and bandleader. Songs about love, loss, and regret are featured on most tunes often with painful but sometimes playful lyrics. The songs throughout (all co-written by Price) are touching and very true to the human condition.
“I Was A Fool For The Things I Said” is an abject apology with a Latin groove to his long-suffering woman and features infectious percussion work by Lenny Castro. “I Said What I Said” features an Isaac Hayes-like groove and is an obvious track for a single. “Creature Of Habit” is an honest summation of who the protagonist feels himself to be. “Stickers On My Suitcase” features another Latin feel with wry lyrics about a traveling man who’s done with journeying about, trading it happily for a woman’s love.
The record’s title track is a sad, slow burn of a ballad featuring a great trumpet solo by guest artist Sean James. It’s definitely one of the strongest cuts on the album. Overall, you’ll need to check it out, it will be well worth your time.
