Which Way Do We Go?

This is an important album. When I interviewed Brandon Santini last year I wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d said, “I’m a White guy. You want to make something of it?” He was working on songs for this album with producer Jeff Jenson who had played guitar on Santini’s last album The Longshot released in 2019 and peaked at Number 7 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart.
In a blindfold test, it would be easy to mistake the singer on Which Way Do We Go as Howlin’ Wolf’s son. Brandon sounds like a 300-lb guy with an attitude. That said, he has heavy crossover creds. His song “Got Good Lovin” from an earlier album was featured on Season One, Episode four of the Peacock Network’s original series Poker Face. “Somebody’s Gotta Go,” can be heard the CBS series Fire Country. And “See That Pony” and “Do What Comes Naturally” from this record were placed in Season Three of CBS series Tulsa King.
That’s not to say he hasn’t paid his blues dues. In 2024 he was operated on for a herniated disk that had been pushing on his sciatic nerve on his right side for a couple of years. “The recovery hasn’t been as good as we hoped,” he told me, “and the pain we targeted hasn’t completely gone away. So, I just keep waiting it out at this point.”
Love, lust, pain and obsession are all exorcised in arrangements that sound like they were captured and cornered in a devil may care delirium barely held in tow during two Memphis sessions that make me wish I could have been there to soak in the vibe.
Santini makes electric blues traditions sound like he just invented the form. Add to the left field influence of Blues Traveler on Santini’s sound the fact that in 2010 he recorded a song called “Airport Song” with Sam the Sham, best known for breaking the British Invasions hold on the pop charts in 1965 with a Top Ten novelty song “Wolly Bully.”
Santini’s guitarist Timo Arthur has been with him for almost 12 years and is his Hubert Sumlin, the perfect foil for Santini’s songs of trouble and woe. “I don’t play guitar on stage. I’ll record and write songs, but Timo handles those duties. He’s an incredible guy, and incredible guitar player. I met him in 2014 in Memphis. He was living in Atlanta, and I was living in Memphis at the time.” I love his album. Good thing because Brandon knows where I live.
