Their love story began in 2018 when they locked eyes at a packed Memphis music conference. A year later, fate brought them back together, leading to a whirlwind romance, marriage, and a musical partnership that continues to grow. Their latest album, Our Time to Ride, was recorded at Studio MixArt in Montreal by producer Eric Corne, with further work at Forty Below Studios in L.A. and Sound Arts in Houston. It's an electrifying mix of blues-rooted grooves, soulful melodies, and rock-driven riffs. The album was largely recorded live, giving it an organic energy that mirrors their live performances. Standout tracks include; "Love You Just the Same," a vibrant love letter set to music; "People Gonna Talk," a bold reminder to ignore outside noise; "Sing," a soaring anthem for the voiceless; and the title track, "Our Time to Ride, embracing the journey ahead.

Mesquite meets mustache in Memphis. Motown delighted.
Annika Chambers, from deep-south Houston, TX, looks like the choir leader at a Baptist church. Handlebar mustachioed Paul DesLauriers, from the far north country (Ontario Canada), looks like his normal job is ringmaster at the circus. They met in Memphis. Cupid’s magic, then marriage, ensued. Now they are clearly devoted to one another.
This record “feels” like great albums from Motown’s heyday. There’s a range of rhythms, embraceable emotions, and a backline with horns, vocalists, and organ. It’s reminiscent of vinyl records I wore out from the Temptations, Four Tops, and Supremes.
Chambers, an army veteran, has a nuclear power plant voice and loads of soul. She’s not Aretha, but she’s in the neighborhood. DesLauriers is an enormously talented guitarist who is deservedly featured throughout. He delivers everything from Sly Stone-type, wah-wah funk to inimitable, deeply satisfying, acrobatic runs. On a recording where every musical aspect is near-perfect, DesLauriers’ outstanding playing deserves special celebration.
There’s plenty of style variety on this nine-cut, 41-minute set. The headliners write all but one tune. Distinguished producer Eric Corne does that here and contributes “Sing,” an emotional plea to sing for the “silent and suffering.”
For sure this is a love letter from and to each other. Go to “One In A Million” to get the picture. That killer duet delivers heart-melting sentiment. It transports you back to that first, chest-pounding slow dance with the one you love (or loved). Chambers sings, “He looks at me / With sparkle in his eye / And every time we’re apart / He’s a mess inside.” And DesLauriers answers, “She lights up / My darkest days / Just with her smile / There ain’t nothing she has to say.”
The unconditional “Love You Just The Same,” toe-tapping “People Gonna Talk,” confident “Written In The Stars,” and soaring “Believe In Love” take assorted, entertaining paths – all arriving at the same destination – two people perfectly partnered – personally and professionally – with the guts, chops, and talent to stir your soul. The title cut is a rocker that has the pair entering, not timidly, but “coming in like a freight train.”
Listening to this set, you understand why Chambers has received multiple Blues Music Award nominations, winning three times as Soul Blues Female Artist. DesLauriers is equally accomplished, garnering six Maple Blues Awards and taking second place at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge.
Together they are really, really good.
