DEVON ALLMAN
The Blues Summit
Ruf Records
Guitarist/singer/songwriter Devon Allman has made so much progress in the last two decades in his career. He’s been spreading accessible blues-rock to the masses, the kind made so famous by his late father. What’s more, he’s not far removed from younger generations to bring the 20 and 30-something kids into the blues-rock fold.
His new album, The Blues Summit, is a star-studded affair. I was lucky enough to see him in concert over the summer in Red Bank, NJ, as the Jersey Shore has always been a hot market for him.
He’s doing what so many people in the blues and jazz worlds do already, sharing his stage with other regionally known musicians, people like vocalist Sierra Green, harp master Jimmy Hall, Larry McCray, and even New Jersey-raised organist John Ginty, now based in Florida.
On The Blues Summit, he’s joined by a bevy of good guests, but he does not climb on their shoulders, and prominent guests include Christine “Kingfish” Ingram and Robert Randolph. He opens the album with some tasty guitar riffs and showcases the talents of Ingram on “Runners In The Night” then jumps into the catchy “The Blues Is A Feeling” where Jimmy Hall shines on harmonica and vocals. “Peace To The World” is a radio ready anthem of positivity and a way to bring new fans into the blues camp.
He and his band also inject new life into covers like Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” and Willie Dixon’s familiar staple, “Wang Dang Doodle.” Ginty’s soulful, inventive organ playing adds body to the band’s sound, and he is showcased on “Peace To The World,” “Blues Is A Feelin’,” and most of the other tracks on this album.
In sum, this is a solid effort from a rising star in the world of blues-rock, and the album should open venue doors for him throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe for many months to come.
