JIMMY VIVINO
Gonna Be 2 Of Those Days
Gulf Coast Records
North Jersey raised guitar slinger, singer, songwriter, and bandleader Jimmy Vivino offers up a thoughtful batch of topical, contemporary blues tunes on Gonna Be 2 Of Those Days his debut for the acclaimed Gulf Coast Records label.
He opens with a song about the pandemic years when everyone was wearing a mask, “Blues In The 21st,” and showcases a bevy of other smart originals that break new lyrical ground in modern blues. The title track, “Gonna Be 2 Of Those Days,” is a lament about inflationary pressures under the Biden administration, while another track, “Ain’t Nuthin’s Gonna Be Alright,” addresses how our inner cities and parts of California – all of California? – are falling apart. Vivino expresses his desire to move back to northern New Jersey where life is more predictable.
He’s got excellent musicians backing him up from the get-go on his Gulf Coast debut, from guitar titan Joe Bonamassa on the album’s opener, “Blues In The 21st,” to veteran drummer Rich Pagano and percussionist Mark Teixera. Most people think of Vivino for his role as guitarist with Max Weinberg’s Band on The Conan O’ Brien Show, but here, he contributes his own keyboards and piano on parts of this album. Scott Healy contributes some romping, stomping piano stylings on “Beware The Wolf,” a track that also showcases veteran musician John Sebastian on harmonica.
Vivino offers up his thoughts on global climate change and the need for all of us – Republican or Democrat – to be more environmentally conscious on “Goin’ Down Fast.”
He closes the album with “Back Up The Country” accompanied again by Sebastian, a man whose career serves as a model for others in how to keep a musical career going.
Don’t be surprised in coming years if we hear more contemporary, topical and political blues from the ever-inventive Vivino. Like folk-blues singer-songwriter John Gorka says in his song, “I’m From New Jersey,” people from New Jersey “don’t expect too much” but “they will surprise you.”
